Housing of the Faculty of Philosophy: from 1964 to the present

The establishment of the University of Ioannina in 1964 created the need to find facilities to house the Schools and services of the University. Initially, the Faculty of Philosophy, the first school of the University of Ioannina, was housed in the premises of the Zosimaia Pedagogical Academy since its inception in 1964. A year later, in 1965, it was moved to the building at 30 Dompoli Street. For the administrative and educational needs of the University, the buildings of Georgiou Stavrou, Kamberio and the apartment buildings at 1 Salamagka, 21 Dodonis and 2 Napoleonos Zerva Streets and 37-39 were used.

However, the concentration of the University's services in a single and functional space required the creation of a modern University Campus.

For this purpose, in 1970, the University was granted an area of ​​3,200 acres in the Dourouti area by the Metropolis of Ioannina and the Ministry of Agriculture. In 1973, the foundations of the first building (Transitional) were laid with a gross area of ​​16,000 sq.m. The building of the School of Philosophy was laid in 1980, with a gross area of ​​17,000 sq.m. and a final construction cost of 530,000,000 drachmas. It was completed in 1984 and has housed the Departments of Philology and History and Archaeology ever since. The amphitheater of the School of Philosophy “Sotirios Dakaris”, with 320 seats, was founded in 1984 and its construction was completed in 1988. Its gross area amounted to 4,250 sq.m. and the final construction cost was determined at 140,000,000 drachmas. Finally, in 1991 the second building of the School of Philosophy was founded, which houses the Department of Philosophy, Pedagogy and Psychology. It was delivered for use to the University in 1996 with a gross area of ​​16,000 sq.m. and a final construction cost of 1,800,000,000 drachmas.
